Review of Undercover Bromance

After a long time, I'm back with a review of the second part of The Bromance Book Club series by Lyssa Kay Adams.

It was awful.

In the second installment, we follow Braden Mack, the founder of the book club and owner of several nightclubs, and Olive Papandreas, Thea's sister, chef at one of New York's most popular restaurants. Liv finds herself involved in unmasking her boss's crimes after witnessing one of them. With Branden's help, they begin to reveal more of Liv's ex-boss's deception and become more entangled with each other. Will Liv be able to find the truth and accept it? Will Branden put his pride aside to open himself to love? Will I like Liv and Braden's characters more? (No, in fact I hate them more now.) WARNING: There is workplace sexual abuse, victimization of S.A. victims, mention of domestic abuse, mention of internalized misogyny, and hypocritical characters.

The review will mention scenes pf the book, so there will be spoilers.

After reading this book, I didn't think there was anything good in it. However, with this second reading, I managed to rescue some things in favor of the story.

The ending. Whether or not it is realistic, I think it is important to have "happy" endings to give hope and justice for victims. At the end of the day, it is a romantic comedy, it must have a happy ending that can satisfy and cheer up the audience.

The secondary characters. They were enjoyable and made the reading much more tolerable.

The villain is villainous. You hate him with all your being and you wait for his downfall.

I will start with the main flaw of this book, which is the background theme.

The background theme is the context of the conflict that targets the protagonist and that they must seek to solve. This includes the space where the story takes place, time, social conflicts, political conflicts, economic conflicts, among others.

The background theme of this book is sexual abuse in the workplace and at home, which I feel is used as an excuse to give a happy ending to someone who bullies victims.

Liv bullies and intimidates victims on several occasions into exposing themselves to the public. Even though Liv may be supportive and believe them, she continues to judge and control them and the lives of others (like in the last book).

This is Liv's arc in the book: "Judge less, giving people confidence and autonomy to do what they can in their lives". Yet, throughout the arc, it feels as she is using the victims as instruments to advance the plot and her life, instead of helping them. I feel like they should reduce the sexual abuse, so that Liv wouldn't be seen as such a detestable person. Also, at various times she shows internalized misogyny that is very annoying and even though it continues to be a reflection of her growth as a person, she never apologizes for that behavior and ends up annoying the reader more.

In my opinion, Liv should not have been the narrator and I would have forgiven her more things if she were a secondary character with the same arc, but in a lower scope.

Braden Mack. It is no secret that he is one of my most hated characters in the saga. But in this novel, I tolerate him more because Liv beats him. Although he is still an annoying character, I find Braden's personality pretentious and hypocritical as he feels superior to others for advocating for therapy (which he does not use). He is the voice of reason in many instances and I find his story with his mother very nice. But the chemistry he has with Liv is annoying. I am not a big fan of fights where one character is right and the other is stubborn in not recognizing it just because they are proud people.

The comedy was a mistake in this novel, as well as not mentioning triggers. The jokes emphasized harassment and risky situation, rather than letting the reader take a break from a serious tone.

Spoilers for the following novels: The Russian makes a joke about kidnapping people in reference to the fact that “they always do it in Russia”. First of all, itsounds xenophobic, but also a person close to him was a victim of kidnapping and murder. So the joke turns to be really insensitive.

At the same time, this is something that bothers me. The mention of many characters that make no impact on the story. We are told that the club has around 20 members, but it only meets as a group of 6 people. And of those 6, only 3 or 4 are ever focused on. I understand that it is better for the narrative, but it adds nothing to the story other than text filler.

To end on a good note, I loved Alexis and Noah. If Liv and Braden were the worst of the previous book and ended up being the protagonists of the second installment, Alexis and Noah were one of the best aspects of the story.

I love Alexis, her personality, her charisma and the way she sees life is very inspiring. You create a connection with her. And Noah. Wow, he had few scenes, but I loved the way he was. He made me laugh, he didn't make references to risky situations and everything was done in favor of protecting the victims.

I give the book a 1.75 stars. I was very disappointed and would recommend people to skip it. Especially if you have any trauma in relation to the topics discussed. Braden and Liv work better as secondary or background characters. This was the second most disappointing read I had in 2023, the first being Carmilla and Laura.

The Zine O’Biology is a fictional comparative xenobiology academic journal set in the Star Trek universe. If you’ve always wanted to wax eloquent for up to 3000 words about your theories on alien biology, welcome to your new home!

We want all your theories about all your favorite aliens! This is a friendly but competitive academic journal where the content of every paper is a little bit suspicious (is this paper based on rumor or fact? What is the methodology?) and some competing authors leave snarky comments on one another’s work. So just like a real academic journal, except ours features the Great Green Anthurium.

We welcome xenobiology articles on all Star Trek aliens from all series!

The final format will be a PDF that you can scroll at your leisure or print at home in order to have a physical copy of the Zine. (This way there is no money involved.)

In order of brightness,

Vega (α Lyrae) is the bright star at the upper left of the image. It is the brightest star in Lyra, the fifth-brightest in the night sky, and the second-brightest visible in the Northern Hemisphere. It is a blue-white giant star about 25 light years from the Sun. It has about twice the mass and a little over twice the size of the Sun. The name comes from the Arabic word wāqi' meaning "falling" or "landing".

Sulafat (γ Lyrae) is the second brightest star, a blue giant star about 620 light years from Earth. It is about 6 times as massive and 13 times the size of the Sun. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-sulḥafāt meaning "turtle", connecting lyres with their material: tortoiseshell.

Sheliak (β Lyrae) is a multiple star system, consisting of six stars at a distance of about 960 light years from Earth. The primary star is a blue giant about 3 times the mass and 15 times the size of the Sun. The name comes from the Arabic word šiliyāq which was one of the names for Lyra in Arabic astronomy.

δ² Lyrae is a red supergiant star about 770 light years from the Sun. Although it is only 4.5 times as massive, it is almost 300 times the size of the Sun!

ζ¹ Lyrae is a binary star system about 156 light years from Earth. The primary is a blue-white chemically peculiar star about 2.5 times the size and mass of the Sun.

ε² Lyrae is a binary star system that forms one half of "the Double Double". This system lies about 156 light years from Earth. The primary is a blue-white giant star about 2.1 times the mass of the Sun.

ε¹ Lyrae is another binary system and the other half of "the Double Double". This system is marginally more distant at 162 light years away. The primary is a blue-white star about twice the mass of the Sun.

δ¹ Lyrae is the optical companion to δ² Lyrae; the two systems are unrelated. δ¹ Lyrae is a binary star system composed of a blue star and an orange giant. The entire system is about 1,160 light years away.

Finally, ζ² Lyrae is a single white-hued star about 158 light years from the Sun. It has about 1.75 times the mass of the Sun and is about twice as big.

Rainier III, Prince of Monaco

Physique: Average Build Height: 5’ 9" (1.75 m)

Rainier III (Rainier Louis Henri Maxence Bertrand Grimaldi; 31 May 1923 – 6 April 2005; aged 81) was Prince of Monaco from 1949 to his death in 2005. Rainier ruled the Principality of Monaco for almost 56 years, making him one of the longest-ruling monarchs in European history. He was crucially responsible for the transformation of Monaco’s economy, shifting from its traditional casino gambling base to its current status as a tax haven and cultural destination. The Prince also coordinated the substantial reforms of Monaco’s constitution, which limited the powers of sovereign rule.

Born at the Prince's Palace of Monaco, the only son of Hereditary Princess Charlotte and Prince Pierre. Rainier's early education was conducted in England, at the public schools of Summerfields in St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex, and after 1935 at Stowe School, in Buckinghamshire. Rainier then attended the Institut Le Rosey in Rolle and Gstaad, Switzerland from 1939, before continuing to the University of Montpellier in France, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1943, before studying at Sciences Po Paris in Paris. Rainier became the Sovereign Prince of Monaco upon the death of his maternal grandfather, Prince Louis II, on 9 May 1949, at the age of 25.

Rainier married American film star Grace Kelly in 1956, which generated global media attention. They had three children with one of them being highly fuckable Albert. Anyway, I can see why he pulled Grace Kelly. Prince of not, I’m saying yes to anything he would have offered. Watersports. Slapping nuns. Putting babies on spikes. OK, that last one was a joke and would have been an immediate no, but I would have thought about it. Again, look at him!

Rainier died in April 2005 from complications relating to a lung infection as a result of frequent smoking; he was succeeded by his son, Albert II.

🎄💾🗓️ Day 11: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - The SEL 840A🎄💾🗓️

Systems Engineering Laboratories (SEL) introduced the SEL 840A in 1965. This is a deep cut folks, buckle in. It was designed as a high-performance, 24-bit general-purpose digital computer, particularly well-suited for scientific and industrial real-time applications.

Notable for using silicon monolithic integrated circuits and a modular architecture. Supported advanced computation with features like concurrent floating-point arithmetic via an optional Extended Arithmetic Unit (EAU), which allowed independent arithmetic processing in single or double precision. With a core memory cycle time of 1.75 microseconds and a capacity of up to 32,768 directly addressable words, the SEL 840A had impressive computational speed and versatility for its time.

Its instruction set covered arithmetic operations, branching, and program control. The computer had fairly robust I/O capabilities, supporting up to 128 input/output units and optional block transfer control for high-speed data movement. SEL 840A had real-time applications, such as data acquisition, industrial automation, and control systems, with features like multi-level priority interrupts and a real-time clock with millisecond resolution.

Software support included a FORTRAN IV compiler, mnemonic assembler, and a library of scientific subroutines, making it accessible for scientific and engineering use. The operator’s console provided immediate access to registers, control functions, and user interaction! Designed to be maintained, its modular design had serviceability you do often not see today, with swing-out circuit pages and accessible test points.

I learned Fortran on it in eight grade, in 1970. It was at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where my parents worked, and was used to take data from cyclotron experiments and perform calculations. I later patched the Fortran compiler on it to take single-quoted strings, like 'HELLO', in Fortran FORMAT statements, instead of having to use Hollerith counts, like 5HHELLO.

In 1971-1972, in high school, I used a PDP-10 (model KA10) timesharing system, run by BOCES LIRICS on Long Island, NY, while we were there for one year on an exchange.

This is the front panel of the actual computer I used. I worked at the computer center in the summer. I know the fellow in the picture: he was an older high school student at the time.

The first "personal" computers I used were Xerox Alto, Xerox Dorado, Xerox Dandelion (Xerox Star 8010), Apple Lisa, and Apple Mac, and an original IBM PC. Later I used DEC VAXstations.

I have 2 thoughts on this one:

1. There was a fan theory during the court trial in lore olympus (persephone was on trail for mass murder, long story) where hades and persephone got married before the trail started because at one point he called her his wife. This wasn't the case because she was 20 and he was in his 2000 (aka 40's) Idk if Rachel was a fan of acotar and wanted to steal from it (since acomaf was released in 2016 and the trial was released in 2020) but because people guessed it she dropped it. Idk that's just a my own theory.

2. How can she be the high lady when the mother is the one to give out titles? Do you realize what you just start Ryhsand? This could lead to more war against the more religious courts, this could lead to the end of the night court if the mother finds out... oh wait, this is acotar. Not real high fantasy, there's no real religious world building.

You do this every time freye, anytime your some where "better" you always just stick your noise up at your old home.

Question 48 If you could build your home from scratch, what outrageous feature would you want to build into it?

Oooooo assuming I have a little bit of an extra budget to go real hog wild.

Kitchen first... double oven for sure. A full wall of cabinets with clever drawers so I can organize all the flours/sugars/spices and baking pans. Let's build a standalone freezer next to the fridge right in the kitchen cause I have so much frozen food I'd like to have handy.

Currently I have a cramped little sewing nook now and my home office is shared in the bedroom. So let's make my bedroom just for cozy sleeping. I'd want to upgrade my bookshelves from perfectly servicable Ikea to study custom built-in bookcases with drawers and glass doors to cut down on dust. I'd paint my bedroom ceiling a deep indigo night sky with little silver and gold accents for subtle stars.

A sewing craft space with beautiful wide plank wood floors, something pine or light wood. A big old farmhouse table for my cutting table, an L shaped desk for my sewing machine and ironing station. Maybe a whole attic to be my creative space. Soft rugs everywhere. Plants in pots. I'd want a corner for writing desk with plants and a window perfectly positioned for good light and a soft breeze. And a big plush armchair for naps and brainstorming. Quilt ladders everywhere. A design wall space. A roomba to trundle about and vacuum. Pillow dog beds everywhere with heating pads. Gingham curtains in golderod or sage green.

A projector for movie nights in the living room. A super cozy couch.

I'd like a little backyard with jasmine and gardenia flowers and a small patch of grass or moss so my dog can sunbathe. T'would be peak cottage coziness.

Upon reflection... is this thinking too small? Can I request a robot to do the dishes and clean the bathrooms?

Question 58 What kind of bag do you use for your bag full of bags?

LOL California makes you pay for bags so I'm usually got the reusable totes in the car. The rare plastic bags go in the hall cabinet for when guests need a bag. (Got to actually buy small bathroom trashbags cause grocery bags are a rare 10 cent commodity)

Two years ago I got to buy refrigerated tote bags for a work project. We had ~100 extra when the project concluded so everyone got to take home ten totes as a little treat. So the bags live in the blue fridge tote with zip top from my Clinical Trial project. It was very funny cause I needed a non-branded cold totes with zipper top to maintain blinding in the clinical trial so participants could carry their eye drops about the clinic and my supply vendor was befuddled by this request and sourced something that was like 20 bucks a pop. I googled cheaptotebags.com, found what I needed for 1.75 a bag if we ordered 500, and I made them use cheaptotebags.com. Bless the power of google and saying no to outrageous quotes.
